<p><b>General Santos City (Dadiangas)</b> (oft kurz <b>GenSan</b> genannt, der frühere Name war <i>Dadiangas</i>) ist die südlichste Stadt der <a href="Philippinen" title="Philippinen">Philippinen</a>, an der Südküste der Insel <a href="Mindanao" title="Mindanao">Mindanao</a>. General Santos ist ein bedeutender <a href="Seehafen" title="Seehafen">Seehafen</a> am Ende der <a href="Bucht_von_Sarangani" title="Bucht von Sarangani">Bucht von Sarangani</a> in der <a href="Celebessee" title="Celebessee">Celebessee</a>. Außerdem hat die Stadt Zugang zum fruchtbaren Koronadaltal, wo es zahlreiche Landwirtschaftsbetriebe gibt und der <a href="Buayan_(Fluss)" title="Buayan (Fluss)">Buayan River</a> fließt.

</p><p>Der Name der Stadt geht auf General Paulino Santos zurück. Er führte im Jahr 1939 eine Gruppe von 62 christlichen Siedlern an, die sich dort niederließen, um den als fruchtbar geltenden Landstrich zu besiedeln und landwirtschaftlich nutzbar zu machen. Zuvor war die Gegend lediglich vom Volk der B'laan bewohnt, welche nomadisch umherzogen und den Ort <i>Dadiangas</i> nannten. Im Juni 1956 wurde erstmals der Name „General Santos“ für den Ort eingeführt. Dieser wurde dann beibehalten, als General Santos am 8. Juli 1968 den Status einer <a href="St%C3%A4dte_in_den_Philippinen" class="mw-redirect" title="Städte in den Philippinen">Stadt</a> erhielt<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

</p><p>Heute gehören die Agrarindustrie und die <a href="Fischerei" title="Fischerei">Fischerei</a> zu den wichtigsten Wirtschaftsbereichen der Stadt. Dort werden unter anderem <a href="Ananas" title="Ananas">Ananas</a>, <a href="Mais" title="Mais">Mais</a>, <a href="Thunfisch" class="mw-redirect" title="Thunfisch">Thunfisch</a> und Kokosnüsse produziert und verarbeitet. Die Rinderzucht spielt ebenfalls eine große Rolle für diese Region.

</p><p>Durch große Wirtschaftshilfen von <a href="Japan" title="Japan">Japan</a>, <a href="USA" class="mw-redirect" title="USA">USA</a> und der <a href="Weltbank" title="Weltbank">Weltbank</a> konnte die Infrastruktur von General Santos in den 1990er Jahren stark verbessert werden: Mit dem Bau eines neuen Flughafens, der Errichtung neuer Docks und Hafenmolen begann man 1994. Eine bedeutende Bildungseinrichtung in der Stadt ist die <a href="Mindanao_State_University" title="Mindanao State University">Mindanao State University</a>.
